Featured cast member from NurseTV: Meet Nick Shields
On first impression, Nick is your typical All-American boy: enjoys football, auto racing, playing pool, bowling and working out. But there's much more than meets the eye. This self-described "young, fun and energetic" travel nurse received a hands-on introduction to the profession. On Mother's Day in 1997, at age 16, Nick was in a car accident that tore his aorta, broke both legs and arms, collapsed a lung and caused internal bleeding in his stomach. He spent six months in the hospital before being released. A year later, his brother got testicular cancer and also spent several months in the hospital. It was then that Nick decided nursing was for him. "After seeing the care and all the difference the nurses made in our lives," he said, "I wanted to give back."
Since then, Nick has devoted himself to doing just that. Once, he and a coworker stuck an afro wig on a severely ill patient and serenaded her with the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin.' " "She passed away a day later," he said, "and it put the last smile on her face. That's very rewarding to me - just making people smile."

For this former chef, park ranger and paramedic accustomed to small-town life, California is another world: the traffic, the crowding, the exorbitant cost of living. Even nursing is different. Once, while working in an emergency room, Alycen was accidentally shot by a gang member who had come in looking for a member of a rival gang. "It was a huge wakeup call for me. I've never lived anywhere that had gangs like this," she said.

A self-proclaimed movie fanatic, nothing would make her happier than bumping into the man of her dreams, George Clooney - except, of course, for marrying him. Born on a naval station in the Philippines, Ron was poised to make a big splash when he entered the world. And so far, this self-proclaimed perfectionist has done just that, balancing two nursing jobs, a side acting gig and a slew of hobbies. When Ron isn't serving as nurse manager at a nonprofit AIDS clinic in Hollywood, working at UCLA's hospital on weekends or volunteering at camps for children with heart disease, you might find him on a TV set - he's had acting and consulting stints with "General Hospital" and "The Bold and the Beautiful," among other shows. Or, you might see him rock climbing, scuba diving or water skiing.
Nursing wasn't always part of Ron's plans; he attended Michigan State University with the intention of becoming a biology professor, but found it too boring and switched to medicine. A most fortunate twist of fate, in his eyes. "I think my entire life and nursing career has been just one lucky decision after another," he said. "I kind of fell into something, and it turned out to be the right thing."

Meet Emily Seay...
What do you get when you combine Indonesia, Ireland and Mexico? How about Emily Seay, who has visited Southeast Asia on tsunami disaster relief, enjoys playing traditional Irish music at pubs in her spare time and would love to learn conversational Spanish during a stint on "13 Weeks." This well-rounded Denver native spent the first 2-1/2 years of her nursing career working with the Navajo at Chinle in Arizona. Currently, she's a staff nurse at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Maryland.
Emily's work at Bayview Medical Center led her to be chosen to visit Indonesia last January for tsunami relief. While there, she helped establish mobile clinics and measles campaigns for remote villages that had to be reached via helicopters, fishing boats and amphibious watercraft. It's all par for the course for this nurse whose passion shines brightly. "I never in a million years imagined that I would become a nurse, she said. "I'd always thought of nursing as changing bedpans and giving shots and wearing pink, but it's nothing like that. Nursing has absolutely changed my life. I couldn't have made a better choice."

Red Cross Volunteer Opportunities.
Hurricane Katrina tore through the Gulf Coast states, leaving sheer devastation in its wake and the worst still to come. At least 55 people were reported dead in Louisiana, and an estimated “hundreds” were feared dead across the Gulf Coast region. Floodwater burst through broken levees and overtook New Orleans, forcing a city-wide refugee evacuation. Thousands of people have been left homeless, and power and fresh supplies are scarce, if not nonexistent. In the end, the storm could be the costliest the United States has ever seen.
Volunteers and donors are needed to provide relief, and the American Red Cross is planning to send thousands nationwide to the area, the largest for a single domestic natural disaster.
